Happy Holiday Exchange ✤ Richie & Kirsty Gilmore

It was rare for Kirsty to sleep in later than Richie, but when he returned to their room from his shower, she still hadn’t gotten out of bed. A closer look told him that she was awake, eyes staring blankly at the ceiling, but couldn’t get herself to move. It was hard to tell when it was a physical problem keeping her bedridden and when it was a mental one, especially since she had gotten sober, but neither was ever a reason for Richie to ignore his little sister. Not ever.

He quickly finished towel-drying his hair and threw the wet towel at his laundry hamper, going to sit on Kirsty’s bed.

“Morning, sunshine,” he said, hand automatically reaching to run brush her hair off of her face. “Bad day?”

Kirsty nodded, rolling over to face him. “I want a drink.”

The worst kind of bad day.

“I know, Kissy.” He kept his voice soft, continuing to play with her hair as she curled into his touch. “Do you want to be alone, or company?”’

“Stay. Please?”

“Of course. Can I go get you water?”’

She paused, considering, then nodded. “Fast.”

Richie nodded in return, already heading out of their room. He filled a glass with ice water for her, then grabbed one of her pre-made salads, just in case. He didn’t expect her to eat it but it made him feel better to have the option.

When he got back to their room, Kirsty hadn’t moved so much as an inch. He put the water and salad beside her bed, then got to work. Grabbing extra pillows and stuffed animals from their self, he maneuvered around Kirsty until he had created a cozy nest to keep her mostly-upright, then gently guided her into a sitting position. He spread her extra blankets, a collection that he and Sookie had spent years knitting, making sure that she was securely tucked in in the way that she liked it. Their Wizard Of Oz tape was on the shelf underneath their TV, already positioned facing Kirsty’s bed, so Richie slid it into the tape player and tossed the remote onto the bed. Finally he grabbed one of his sweaters – extra soft from how often he wore it and Kirsty’s favourite to borrow, helping her into it before climbing onto the bed. He took a moment to reposition them until he was leaning against the pillow nest and Kirsty was comfortably between his legs, using his chest as a pillow. He had a hairbrush set to the side for after she drank her water but first he picked up the remote, turning on the TV and starting the movie.

Kirsty took a small sip of water, handing it back to Richie to put on her bedside table, and curled herself more solidly into his chest.

“I love you, Richie.”

Richie leaned down, kissing her on the forehead and wrapping his arms tightly around her tiny frame.

“I love you too, Kissy.”

Introducing James William Gilmore Danes

(aka what if Dani Gilmore-Danes were a boy and raised by Luke)

a year before Rory was born, Lorelai had a son with a boy she'd met on a family beach vacation. She'd left before she knew she was pregnant, but still had his name and phone number written on a postcard. When she found out that she was pregnant, she panicked. She and her parents came to an agreement, they would tell everyone that she was spending a year abroad, she would give the baby up for adoption, and it would be like nothing ever happened.

But then her son was born, a son she couldn't stand to look at or even name, but a son she couldn't just give away to strangers. Instead she took him, left him on the doorstep of Williams Hardware in Stars Hollow with a note, and never looked back. Until two years later, when she moved to Stars Hollow with Rory

James William Danes (named after Jim Kirk, not that Luke will ever admit it) was a happy baby, but a sick one. Some lung issues, frequent pneumonia, health problems that Luke would always blame on him having been left outside, on a doorstep, during the first snow of the year. It was hard to get him the help that he needed, but William Danes was always happy to help his son and grandson as best as he could, and they were making ends meet. Until James was five. William had just died, and while Luke was doing everything he could to take care of funeral arrangements and the hardware store, he'd asked Liz to help with James. Only for her to leave James in a car during a blizzard for several hours.

The fact that James survived was nothing short of a miracle, but it was an expensive miracle, one that Luke couldn't afford. And it was either a miracle or incredibly creepy that at the same time as his son was fighting for his life in a hospital room, James' maternal grandparents showed up. They'd found the postcard in their daughter's room, apparently, and they wanted to know if their grandson was okay.

It was impossible for Luke to swallow his pride and let Emily and Richard help with the medical bills, but he couldn't refuse the help either, so they struck a deal. The Gilmores would cover all of James medical expenses, not only current ones but any future ones as well, and once a month, Luke and James would call and tell them about his life. He'd never seen them face to face, didn't even know their last names, but he knew that they loved him, and he loved them.

It was a system that worked, and James grew up healthy (for the most part), very athletic, and very loved. He was considered a bit of a prince charming around town, attractive and popular and always ready to lend a helping hand – whether it be at his dad's diner, town events, or anything else anyone asked for. Life was good.

Until he went to Rory Gilmore's sixteenth birthday party – Lorelai had always been cold to him and normally he would avoid spending more time around her than necessary, but Luke asked for his help bringing over bags of ice. But it was fine, really. Until, out of absolutely nowhere, he heard his grandmother's voice in the doorway. His grandmother, whom he had never met in person. His grandmother, who was there for her granddaughter's sixteenth birthday. His grandmother: Lorelai Gilmore's mother.

Have to ask, twins headcanons? 🥺

Since Kirsty always said "stumbly bumbly" when she tripped, it became something that Richie still sometimes says when he sees her trip or fall

Richie takes full advantage of Kirsty being able to wear kids clothes to get her so many Winnie the Pooh things (and other disney things but especially Winnie the Pooh)

Richie calls Kirsty his baby sister so often that people at Chilton & Yale assume he has a much much younger sister and not that he's talking about his twin

After the mushroom incident with Lorelai, Richie and Kirsty both really struggle to trust food that anyone gives her, Luke is pretty much the only person they eventually trust without triple checking ingredients/Richie having a bite to make sure? (they trust Sookie to never intentionally give Kirsty allergy or trigger foods but Kirsty sometimes worries that Sookie will forget that there's an allergy food in something)

Richie and Kirsty both have epipens for their allergies but Richie is always the one to give Kirsty hers if she needs it, she's too scared of them/of needles after the first reaction

Richie makes Kirsty a lot of mini pillows with cute patterns to use when she needs to elevate different injuries, starting with making her ones for her hip after the baby twins are born

They have a tradition that on their birthday weekend they always take one day for just twin time. Go to zoos, museums, movies, fairs/festivals, basically anything that sounds like fun and gives them time just to themselves (aka not at home where they might be interrupted), and just spend the entire day together. They've been doing it since they were maybe 13, or whenever Lorelai was willing to trust them to go places without an adult (they're good at finding quiet spots if Richie needs, and if Kirsty has any pain flares then Richie gives her a piggyback ride so she can keep enjoying the day)

When they first start living with Lottie/Preston/the Foresters, it's a long time before Richie trusts them to feed Kirsty. Sometimes she cooks for herself, other times he cooks for her, but both are too traumatized by the mushroom incident and the fear that someone might accidentally give Kirsty an allergy or trigger food is always there (he's always hesitant for himself at first too but a lot more with Kirsty because of the incident)

After the first FND that Emily tricks Kirsty into eating mushrooms, Richie talks to Richard and asks if he'd be willing to keep paying for her for Chilton and dance if she cuts Emily off because he's worried about her safety (Richard says yes, Kirsty keeps doing all the Emily stuff because she has issues)

Even though they were only 3/4 when the mushroom incident happened and their relationships with Lorelai eventually improved again, Richie never fully forgave Lorelai or it or fully trusted her to take care of Kirsty again

what animal i think they would be if they were an animal: trying to think of something better but keep going back to a butterfly. Changes very dramatically and has to completely fall apart and hit rock bottom to do it, but comes out (mostly) better and brighter than before. Always moving around and doing something, only safe to fall apart in her own little cocoon

what position they sleep in: holding her stuffies, curled up in a ball under a lot of blankets (with various limbs elevated depending on what hurts the most)

their favorite drink: Tea! Lavender, vanilla, and basically anything involving chocolate, or any type of fruit/berry are her favourites but she just really loves tea in general. Hot or iced, depending on the weather – she also sometimes likes chai but is more picky about it because she doesn't like cinnamon. But she would tell you it's black coffee
